Technical Skills & Knowledge:

  1. Understanding of Marine Electronics Systems: Expertise in the operation, installation, repair, and maintenance of marine electronics, including radar, GPS, sonar, communication systems, and power management.
  2. Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose and fix issues with marine electronics, identifying both hardware and software problems.
  3. Knowledge of Industry Standards: Familiarity with relevant marine regulations (e.g., ABYC, SOLAS, IEC standards) and safety protocols.
  4. Electrical and Electronic Skills: Knowledge of electrical systems, circuit board repair, wiring, and electrical safety principles in marine environments.
  5. Software and Firmware Updates: Proficiency in updating and configuring software, firmware, and operating systems for marine electronics.
  6. Test and Calibration: Skill in testing and calibrating various systems to ensure they are functioning optimally.

Safety and Environmental Awareness:

  1. Safety Compliance: Adherence to all safety protocols and guidelines, including personal safety gear and safe working practices aboard ships or at docks.
  2. Environmental Awareness: Understanding the environmental impact of electronic equipment, including disposal, recycling, and maintaining eco-friendly operations.
  3. Electrical Safety: Proper handling of high-voltage systems and awareness of potential electrical hazards.

Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking:

  1. Effective Troubleshooting: Ability to logically identify and solve technical issues using critical thinking and diagnostic skills.
  2. Decision Making Under Pressure: Capacity to make informed decisions in urgent or high-pressure situations, particularly when dealing with malfunctioning equipment in critical operations.

Communication Skills:

  1. Clear Reporting: Ability to document and report on technical issues, maintenance, and repairs accurately and clearly.
  2. Customer Interaction: Communicating effectively with clients, providing advice, and explaining technical issues in non-technical terms when needed.
  3. Team Collaboration: Ability to work well within a team of technicians, engineers, and other professionals, both on board and ashore.

Physical & Mental Requirements:

  1. Physical Stamina: Willingness to work in sometimes challenging environments (e.g., confined spaces, rough seas) and endure physical labor.
  2. Attention to Detail: High attention to detail to ensure all systems are correctly installed, calibrated, and functioning without errors.
  3. Multitasking Ability: Managing multiple tasks at once, especially when repairs are urgent and critical systems are down.

Time Management & Efficiency:

  1. Time-Sensitive Work: Ability to work efficiently under deadlines or during periods of high activity, especially if the equipment failure is impacting operational schedules.
  2. Organized and Punctual: Timeliness in completing assigned tasks and scheduling service appointments, ensuring minimal downtime.

Professionalism & Training:

  1. Continuous Learning: Staying up-to-date with new technologies, tools, and methods in marine electronics through ongoing training and professional development.
  2. Certifications: Required certifications, such as Marine Electronics Technician (MET) certification, or others depending on regional regulations and specific technologies. (ABYC – preferred) 
  3. Professional Behavior: Representing the company professionally in all customer interactions and maintaining a high level of ethics.

Documentation & Record Keeping:

  1. Systematic Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate service records, inventories, equipment logs, and inspection reports.
  2. Maintenance Schedules: Ensuring scheduled maintenance is performed timely and documented correctly.

Customer Support:

  1. After-Service Support: Providing after-service support, answering queries, and offering troubleshooting assistance when customers experience issues.
  2. Client Education: Educating clients on how to operate and maintain their equipment safely and effectively.
